Learning to read tarot: where to start

Learning to read tarot: where to start
Practices Publié le 15 August 2026

Learning tarot is not memorising seventy-eight meanings. It is learning to read images — an entirely different path.

Which deck

A faithful reproduction of the Marseille Tarot. Expect around fifteen francs, and the deck will last twenty years.

Avoid artistically reworked decks at first: the details of the images carry the whole reading.

In what order

1. The images, not the keywords. Take one card a day and describe aloud what you see: the colours, where the eyes look, how the feet are placed.

2. The 22 major arcana before the minors. They carry the essentials.

3. The three-card spread, as situation-obstacle-advice.

4. The combinations: two adjacent cards modify one another. This is where tarot becomes readable.

How long it takes

A few weeks to recognise the cards. Several months for the combinations. Years to hold a full consultation.

What Chana would add: draw one card a day for yourself and write it down with the date. Reread the notebook after three months: you will see which cards recur — and more importantly, how your reading has changed.

Three beginner mistakes

Redrawing because you dislike the answer. The second spread answers a different question.

Learning from lists. A card has no single meaning but a cluster that its neighbours steer.

Wanting a yes or no. Tarot is not made for that.

That is the most common mistake. A card has a cluster of meanings that its neighbours steer. Describe the images first.
